Weather: Winds were moderate to strong from the W and then the WNW. Temp started at 9C and then dropped slowly to 6C by the end of the count period. Humidity also dropped quickly by mid-morning abd the barometric pressure was steady. Raptor Observations: Slow start, but picked up later in day. Few raptors but a fair mix of species. The first GOS. Was very low at the alley, providing great look at a large juvie (likely female) GOSHAWK. The GOLDEN EAGLES were very high in poor light...thanks to Keith for helping id them. The forecast is SNOW tomorrow so who knows what'll be on the move. Non-raptor Observations: Poor light conditions this morning made it difficult to spot and ID small birds in the bushes, but the usuals were found. In addition, there is a mob of Purple Finches near Sharpie Alley. They have been seen at the south east end of the ravine and just inside the entrance to the woods over the past few days, sometimes foraging in leaf litter along the road in that area with White-throated Sparows, a Song Sparrow, Cardinals, Juncos, a Golden-crowned Kinglet, and Chickadees and a Titmouse in the branches above. Several flocks of Tundra Swans were seen this morning and we watched as 3 small flocks merged into one +large formation of about 75 birds, high above Sharpie Alley this morning. At the B&B, the most noteworthy non-raptor sighting was an enormous blackbird flock composed mainly of Grackles. Many Starlings were also part of the flock, which was perched in the treetops on the east side of the field at the B&B. Several times, the birds rose en masse providing some spectacular displays of synchronized flying. Other species noted flying about were Crows, Eastern Bluebirds, Goldfinches, Horned Larks and a single Killdeer. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Dave Brown ([email protected]) Hawk Cliff Hawkwatch information may be found at: http://www.ezlink.on.ca/~thebrowns/HawkCliff/index.htm _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
