Weather: Cloud cover was near total. Temperatures were mild. The wind was light and out of the south. Raptor Observations: Pretty slow again today. The highlight was a short-eared owl that crossed low over the lake shortly after we arrived. Non-raptor Observations: There was a great black-backed gull floating on the lake early in the morning. Black-crowned night heron migration continued unabated. More than 15 were seen during the 11 o'clock hour and several more were seen later in the day. Horned larks were also on the move. More than 20 larks passed overhead throughout the day. Also, nine hooded mergansers flew by in the afternoon. Predictions: Overcast with a 100 percent chance of rain in the morning and a 70 percent chance of rain in the afternoon. Looking like a late start or a complete washout tomorrow. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) SMRR- Lake Erie Metropark information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The primary site used by the Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and it's Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan. A secondary site, the Headquarters of Pointe Mouillee State Game Area is used during certain wind conditions. When staffing is available, both sites can be used at the same time. The season begins on the first day of September and concludes on the final day of November. Turn left on West Jefferson and proceed a few hundred yards to the entrance of Lake Erie Metropark.
