Hello,
Lise and I visited Amherst Island today. The weather was clear and sunny, the wind along the shores was brisk, warm clothing was a must have. We saw two Snowy Owls on the KFN property. We did talk to somebody who had seen three owls earlier that day in the same area. We did see a third owl ourselves, it was seen in a field about mid-island. There is still a lot of active hunting going on Amherst Island. Owls Woods road had groups of hunters on it all day, we did not use it. The island was being patrolled by OPP's and Ontario Game Wardens, the most I have ever witness. Along with the owls, we also saw approx. 30 Tundra swans, a nice mix of adults and juveniles. There was one lone Killdeer on the end of the sandbar, it sort of look out of place. We seen one Horned Lark at the bern. It was hanging around the beaten trail, going in and coming back out. There was also one adult Merlin perched on a dead tree on the east side of the bern. Raptors were plentiful. Most of them seen from the middle of the Island to the west end, most numerous was the Rough-legged Hawk, a dozen or so Red-tailed Hawk and 4 American Kestrel. Cheers, Brian Young CCNAB at http://www.birds-of-north-america.net Direction to Amherst Island-It can be reached by the Loyalist Highway, about 1/2 hr. drive west of Kingston. The ferry leaves the main land on the half hour and the island on the hour, the fee is $9.00 for both ways. KFN is private property and only KFN members may enter it and/or bring visitors with them. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
