Guelph's 45th CBC took place on Sunday, December 18, 2011. Although only
63 species were recorded, which is about average for the last decade,
and well below the high of 70 species, some exceptional records were
obtained. The mild weather obviously contributed to many of the new and
high records obtained.

We found a surprising 4 new species for the count:
Great Egret - 1 bird with green wing tags seen leaving the circle into
Halton County.
American Wigeon - 1
Greater Scaup - 16
Golden Eagle - 1 (last seen near corner of County Rd 34 and Victoria
Road)

We also had record counts for the following species with the previous
record in brackets:
Canada Goose - 5888 (5675)
Redhead - 7 (6)
Bufflehead - 3 (1)
Common Merganser - 321 (224)
Cooper's hawk - 12 (9)
Red-bellied Woodpecker - 10 (7)
Common Raven - 6 (5)

We also tied records for:
Hooded Merganser - 8
Northern Harrier - 4
Merlin - 2

Thanks to all participants for another successful count!

Mike Cadman
