Winter Birders Today at 2:22 p.m. I flushed the Bobolink in Saltfleet while walking east from 10th Rd E along the south side of the creek which is mentioned in Alfred Adamo's excellent directions below.
It flushed from the side of the berm, (which runs parallel to the creek on the south side.) just at the first break in the berm where some water is running into the creek, about 100 metres from the road. It called once as it took flight and flew east over the head of Doug Hynes ( or Hynd? sorry Doug), a visiting birder from Newfoundland. The bird continued east, up over the berm, so that we did not see it land. We did not refind it as we searched the field to the east. Doug may have been more successful relocating the BOBO after I departed. Bring waterproof footwear if you try for the bird as it is quite wet in some parts of the fields. Also, there was a pair of C. Ravens doing flight displays over the entrance to the quarry just to the south along 10th Rd E. on the west side. Good birding! And Happy Holidays! This is opposite a culvert just before the road ascends a steep hill. Directions: Take QEW to Fifty Road in Winona, go south on Fifty Rd up the Escarpment to Ridge Rd. Turn right on Ridge Rd and then left at the next road which is 10th Rd. E. Go south of the tracks and park at the pulloff on the east side of the road. The creek is about 200 m farther south were it crosses the road. Best of the Season!
