Ontbirds subscribers,

I just spoke to my friend, well-known Orono birder Jim Richards about some
photographs that he sent me to review earlier this evening.

His friend Jim Robinson photographed a first winter male Smew in Whitby Harbour
this morning. The bird was seen just inside the breakwall directly across fom
the parking lot on Water Street from which people have been enjoying the
long-staying Snowy Owl at Whitby Harbour.

I understand that at least one Toronto birder searched unsuccessfully for this
bird this afternoon, but it may still be present in the area as there are many
places it could be in this area with all the open water that is present. A
report and photographs are already on file with the Ontario Bird Records
Committee's Secretary Mark Cranford.

Exit Hwy 401 at exit 410 (Brock St.) and follow it south 2 km. (to where Brock
St. veers east and becomes Water St.) to the parking lot at the pier at Whitby
Harbour across from the Whitby Marina. The bird was seen just off this parking
lot.
