Hi everyone!! To celebrate the final day of 2011 we decided to take our daughter to the Aquarium of Niagara, and then some birding! We headed to the Port Weller Pier to search for the adult King Eider. No luck with that, but on our way walking back on the Waterfront Trail, Melissa spotted a Snowy Owl! He was on a lighthouse on a pier inside the Saint Catherine's Marina. It was an adult male with very few spots, and very small for a Snowy.
Note that when he originally was spotted he was inside the Marina, which is gated (and trespassing is forbidden!), and accessible only to members, but he can be safely viewed from the Waterfront Trail / Seaway Haulage Road (though at a distance). He flew off and landed on some rocks on the East Jetty at the end of the Port Weller Waterfront trail that goes out to the canal's mouth. The geographic coordinates of the lighthouse he was first sighted on are: 43.230881 / -79.211003 No Eider but surprised to hear a Carolina Wren along the trail, also lots of Mergansers, a few Bufflehead and Goldeneye, some American Coots, DC Cormorants, one Horned Grebe, one Common Loon, and a large flock of Robins. Happy New Year everyone!!!
