Spring is here! Well, sort of, many birds seem to think so.
RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS, CANADA GEESE and RING-BILLED GULLS have returned in
numbers. A pair of GADWALL and a male WOOD DUCK were also seen. An adult
HEERMANN'S GULL was seen by many at the Des Chenes rapids on March 3rd. However
after extensive discussions during which HEERMANN'S GULL, GREY GULL, hybrid
gull (HEERMANN'S X CALIFORNIA?) and partially melanistic gull were considered.
Gull experts were consulted and it has been generally accepted that this was a
bird that can not be positively identified.

Some of the more interesting birds have been;
- the VARIED THRUSH continues at 988 Calypso Road
- 2 adult TRUMPETER SWANS were seen March 6th and 7th on the Mississippi river
north of the hwy 7 bridge west of Carleton Place
- AMERICAN ROBINS, flocks of BOHEMIAN and a few CEDAR WAXWINGS continue all
over the Ottawa/Gatineau area
- NORTHERN SHRIKE continue to be seen at many locations
- the NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD continues on Grandview and (possibly the same) at
Rue Bourque and Labelle in Gatineau on March 5th
- 6 GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS were seen in the Maple Hill park area in Manotick
- a male WOOD DUCK was seen March 7th on the open water at Billings bridge
- COMMON GRACKLES were reported in Stittsville on March 8th
- 6 SNOW GEESE (including 2 blue morph) were seen from French Hill road on
March 7th
- 8-10 GRAY PARTRIDGE were seen March 8th on the south side of Giroux west of
the ponds
- a male/female pair of GADWALL were seen near Britannia Point on March 8th
- male and female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE continue to be reported on the Ottawa and
Rideau rivers

Thank you for your bird observations,
Good Birding
