Hello Ontbirders, This morning at 9:30 a.m. I noticed a single male Red-breasted Merganser on the large quarry pond on Moodie Drive. It was swimming with a couple of Common Mergansers in front of the gate and then disappeared from view behind the spit. A couple of Buffleheads, Ring-necked Ducks and scaup were also present (I believe these were Greater Scaup but would appreciate confirmation if anyone sees them today).
Shortly after leaving the Moodie Drive quarry I saw a single Snow Goose feeding in a field with several Canada Geese on Eagleson Road just south of Rushmore. Directions: From Highway 417, take Highway 416 south to Fallowfield Road. Turn right (west) and drive 0.4 km to reach Moodie Drive (the first set of lights on Fallowfield). Turn left onto Moodie Drive and go 5.3 km, passing Cambrian Road to reach the quarries (second gate on the left). If you reach Barnsdale Road you have gone too far. Park along the side of the road without blocking the access. Please note the quarry is private property - there is no need to cross the gate to see the birds. To reach Eagleson Drive, continue heading south on Moodie and turn right onto Barnsdale. Follow Barnsdale to the end and turn right on Eagleson. Look for a large flock of geese on the left-hand side between Brownlee and Rushmore. Good birding!
