While birding Flamborough this morning I ran into Jim Dowall at the marsh on Safari Rd. a km or so west of Valens Rd. We had 3 or 4 singing Virginia Rails and as we were trying to get the number of Rails calling, a Least Bittern flew right over our heads from the NW side of the wetlands and landed on the other side of the road very close to where we were standing. Patience didn’t work for us and that was the last time we saw the bird and not once did the bird vocalize. This is the same place that I had no fewer than 5 LEBI in 2011.
Terry Directions. North from Hwy 5 on Hwy 6 to Safari Rd. Drive west approximately 10 kms to Valens Rd then continue on for another km. The marsh is on the nth and sth side of the road. Parking is not good here so be careful. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
