Hey Birders,
Sorry for the delay in posts for the past 2 days, the 11th
annual bird race was on. Overall migration has been relatively slow, with a
trickle of things moving through. Nevertheless a number of ‘good’ birds have
been found on the island.
Highlights:
Iceland Gull – 1 first-year bird at Fish Point May 11th
Lesser Black-backed Gull – 1 3rd year bird at
Fish Point May 12th
Least Bittern – 1 bird heard at Lighthouse Point May 11th
Prothonotary Warbler – the same bird at Fish Point, daily.
Another male has been heard and seen along the East Shore Road, between Middle
and Lighthouse Point in the canal the last 2 days.
Louisiana Waterthrush – 1 bird seen at Middle Point May 11th
Yellow-breasted Chat – same bird on territory along the West
Shore, daily.
Yellow-throated Vireo – singles behind the Dump and the
Harris Garno Trail.
Red-shouldered Hawk – 1 bird at the north end of the island,
May 11th
At least 25 species of warblers have been found on the
island. Migration was abit better today, particularly at the north end of the
island.
The 11th annual Botham Bird Race was held noon
May 11th to noon today, May 12th. A total of 145 species
were found by the 7 parties involved. The winning party of a 126
species, was won by ‘Birds and Bro’s’ - yours truly and brother, Mike Burrell.
2nd place came in at 111 species, the Juvenile Banaquits, Sean
Jenniskens and Larry Cornelis and company.
Many thanks to all involved.
Good Birding,
Ken Burrell
