Point Pelee National Park Migration Update for: May 15, 2012. It is quality over quantity at Point Pelee today, although at least 23 species of warblers were seen by FOPP hike leaders this morning. Highlights from the Tip area of the Park include a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, MERLIN and YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD. A hike led by author Richard Crossley found a late PRAIRIE WARBLER near the Carolinian Forest/Middle Island sign on the west side of the Tip. Going slightly north from the Tip a WILSON’S WARBLER was found near the Cedar Savannah habitat restoration area near the Sparrow Field and a BLACKPOLL WARBLER was on the west side of the road in the same area. The Woodland Trail just north of the Visitor’s Centre featured a BLUE-WINGED WARBLER west of the north bridge, and a CONNECTICUT WARBLER near the Shagbark Hickory tree that is signed on the east side of the Woodland Trail, approximately 100 metres south of the north bridges. No word this morning on the YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT seen and heard on the Shuster Trail the last 3 days, but instead a HOODED WARBLER was singing and moving high up in the tree tops in the same area. On the Tilden Trail both YELLOW-BILLED and BLACK-BILLED CUCKOOS were calling and the YELLOW-BILLED was seen by at least one party. A number of the more common migrant warbler species, such as: AMERICAN REDSTART; BLACK-THROATED BLUE; BLACK-THROATED GREEN; MAGNOLIA; BLACKBURNIAN; BAY-BREASTED; and NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH were also observed along the Tilden Trail. Birders and photographers are reminded that they are NOT to use electronic playback devices or voice phishing to attract birds in the park. We appreciate your cooperation. If you encounter problems in this regard, please contact park staff, and wardens will be notified.
