An unbanded male Piping Plover [complete breast band] was on the
mudflats at the east end of Wildwood Lake in the Ducks Unlimited
impoundment this afternoon from at least 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
Shorebird habitat here has been excellent for weeks although very few
shorebirds have dropped in as reported previously by James Holdsworth.
Today, besides the Piping Plover there was 33 Semi-palmated Plovers, 10
Dunlin, 5 Lesser Yellowlegs, several Killdeer and 40 Least, 1
White-rumped, 3 Solitary and several Spotted Sandpipers.
_Directions:_
From Uniondale, which is about 10 km southeast of St Marys [Perth
County] on Road 119 [19th Line], drive east on Road 28 [aka Road 96].
Turn left [north] on the 31st Line [just before Harrington] and drive
about 1 km watching for breaks in the trees to look out on the mud
flats. Most of the shorebirds were on a somewhat isolated sandbar quite
close to the road [< 150 metres]. As well, you can drive farther north
about 500 metres to a path on the right that leads to a dyke that
separates the drawn-down Ducks Unlimited impoundment from Wildwood Lake.
From the dyke you can see the flats where the shorebirds were albeit at
a greater distance.
If you're coming from Hwy 401, take Cty. Road 6 north at Exit 222
through Embro and Brooksdale to Road 28 [aka 96th Line]. Turn left
[west], drive through Harrington and turn right [north] on the first
road, 31st Line, and follow the directions given above.
