Yesterday, 17 May 2012, Jean and Blayne Farnan found two early Whimbrels along the Lake Erie shoreline at Morgan’s Point in Wainfleet (just south of Port Colborne). This ties the earliest known record of Whimbrel ever found in Niagara when 20 birds were observed in Fort Erie 46 years ago on 17 May 1966.
Directions: from the junction of Highway 3 and Highway 58 in the west end of Port Colborne travel south on Highway 3 some 2 1/2 kms to Golf Course Road. Turn left and at the bottom of the road it bends to the right and becomes Lakeshore Road. The next road on your left is Morgan’s Point Road, turn here and drive east to the Lake Erie shoreline. The two birds were seen resting on some large rocks along the shoreline. Kayo Kayo Roy 13 Kinsman Court. Fonthill, ON.
