Don Barnett, Tim McCarthy and I spent 14 hours today starting at 5:30 am
and had six flocks totalling 635 Whimbrels, included one which had
a distinct V-shaped white rump extending to the upper back.
Examination of the photos will required to determine if this is the
Siberian or European subspecies. This flock was in the area for nearly
two hours, making at least 8 passes around the observation area and
landing on the rip-rap of the most sw peninsula three times, once for
20 minutes. Other migrant shorebird consisted of 367 Dunlin in eight
flocks, 5 Ruddy Turnstones, 3 Black-bellied Plovers and one
Sanderling. We had 16 Common
Loons. The big movements usually occurs from 23-25 May, so tomorrow
should bring significant numbers as well.
Location: The park is located at the end of Kipling and south of
Lakeshore Boulevard. The parking lot is located at the end of Colonel
Samuel Smith Park Drive. If that parking lot is full, free parking is
allowed on 13th street which runs along the east side of the park.
