The Wylie Road Runner team consisting of Dan Bone, Sean Smith, Mathew Toby
and Martin Parker, while participating in the Carden Challenge for The
Couchiching Conservancy found about noon on Saturday, May 26, a singing
Kirkland's Warbler. The bird was observed briefly as well.
The bird was just off the road on the south east sector of the intersection
of Wylie Road and Alvar Road. It was singing from a clump of coniferous
trees. To access Wylie Road travel north from Kirkfield on City of Kawartha
Lakes Road 6. After passing under the liftlocks turn right onto McNamee
Road and then left onto Wylie Road. Go to the north end of Wylie Road.
Further south on Wylie Road we also found and observed a singing Prairie
Warbler. It was about 1/3 of the way between the Sedge Wren Marsh and the
northern end of Wylie Road.
Do not leave the roadway, especially at the location where the Kirkland's
Warbler was found. The properties on both side of the road at this point
are private lands and the owner(s) do not want anyone to enter either
property. Entering properties without permission creates problems in trying
to protect the the important habitats in the Carden Plain.
If the bird is calling it can be heard clearly from the road.
The bird sang steadily for about 20 mintues and then stopped. Others were
undable to relocate the bird as the day progresses.
A full report for the Ontario Bird Records Committee is in preparation.
