Quebec Compiler & transcriber Bob Cermak [email protected] or [email protected] An unusually late (probably only the 2nd June record) adult GOLDEN EAGLE was seen soaring over and later south of the Eardley escarpment just south of where Eardley-Masham Rd. goes up into Gatineau Park on June 13th. The Ottawa Field-Naturalist's Club Bird Checklist indicates that this species is "suspected to have bred in the district, however confirmation is still required". There is no way of knowing if this is a breeding bird, or a lingerer, wanderer, or whatever. It appears that a GREAT EGRET is on a difficult to see (in the bushes about 2 metres from the ground) nest on the south west side of Conroy Island in the Ottawa River Des Chenes rapids. This small island has nests of hundreds of RING-BILLED GULLS and a number of DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS and BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS. Other interesting sightings were; - MOURNING WARBLERS were seen near Fortune Lake and along Cambrian Road - 2 GRAY PARTRIDGE were seen in the corn stubble on the north side of Regimbald Road about 200 metres west of O'Toole Road on June 8th - a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was seen soaring over Constance Creek at the Thomas Dolan bridge on June 9th - COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were heard over downtown Ottawa on June 13th - the Moodie Drive quarry was active on June 13th with 2 OSPREY, a juvenile BALD EAGLE, 8 GADWALL, 110 MALLARDS, 130 CANADA GEESE, 2 PIED-BILLED GREBES and 4 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS Thanks to everyone who contributed bird observations - Good Birding! _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
