Ontbirders, The final spring installment of the Long Point Bird Observatory's Sighting Board is online here - http://www.bsc-eoc.org/longpoint/index.jsp?targetpg=lpbosight. Featured highlights from the end of the migration season include: Western Sandpiper, Laughing Gull and Mississippi Kites.
The LPBO Cygnus Crusaders, a team of loyal LPBO supporters, conducted their Baillie Birdathon on May 26th to raise critical funds for LPBO's research, education and training programs. A whirlwind tour of the province ending at Long Point resulted in an incredible 204 species observed or heard, a new Ontario Big Day record. This surpassed the longstanding record of 200 species set on May 29, 1999. Sponsors of the team will receive a complete summary of the team's day. You can visit this link to sponsor the Cygnus Crusaders in their fundraising effort - http://www.gifttool.com/athon/OurTeamPage?ID=1914&AID=1845&TID=11231. The summary of the Long Point OFO outing posted last weekend by Jody Allair summarizes the breeding activity well. Since then three Dickcissels (two males, one nest building female) were discovered along Front Rd. just west of Port Rowan in the Ducks Unlimited Campbell-Sinclair Fields. Keep in mind that this is private property and only viewable from the roadside parking lot. A Black Vulture was observed today flying south-west over highway 59 just north of Port Rowan. The Old Cut Research Station will reopen in the beginning of August for the Young Ornithologist Workshop. Regular migration monitoring will commence on August 15.
