30 participants attended this year's tour of Happy Valley and the Palgrave area north of Toronto. Fine summer weather made for an enjoyable day of birding and a total of 73 species. Located in King Township, the Happy Valley Forest is one of the largest remaining intact upland deciduous forests on Canada's Oak Ridges Moraine. Resident species such as *Red-shouldered Hawk, Acadian Flycatcher, Hooded Warbler, Scarlet Tanager* and *Winter Wren*were all present.
In the afternoon at Palgrave Conservation Area, during the mid-day doldrums, we were still able to find local breeders such as *Pine, Yellow-rumped and Blackburnian Warbler's, Golden Crowned Kinglet* and *Red-breasted Nuthatch*. A visit to a local wetland produced a very cooperative *Green Heron*, *Belted Kingfisher,* a family of* Pied-billed Grebes* and a *Northern Waterthrush*. We ended the day at a nearby field with several* Bobolink* and a *Grasshopper Sparrow.* * * Many thanks to our enthusiastic participants. Special thanks to Kevin Shackleton and Gord Cameron for their keen ears and our two young members for their keen eyes. -- John Schmelefske # 7360, RR # 4 Alliston, Ontario,Canada, L9R 1V4 Email: [email protected] Watercolour Gallery: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2001214&id=1051632050&l=ea990bf4ce _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
