Increasing numbers of shorebirds have been seen this week.
A WESTERN SANDPIPER, reported by two observers July 16th, was reported by 
another observer at the Russell Lagoon on July 25th. Contrary to my report last 
week there are four July records for this species in this area; 17th 2005 at 
Shirleys Bay, 19th 2009 Almonte lagoon, 28th 2002 Winchester lagoon and 28th 
2006 on the Quebec side of the Ottawa River at Brebeuf Park.
 
Varying numbers of shorebirds have been seen all week at;
- Shirleys Bay, on July 24th there were; 8 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 15 LESSER 
YELLOWLEGS, 7 LEAST SANDPIPER, 10 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, 3 SEMIPALMATED 
PLOVER, 1 STILT SANDPIPER and numbers of SPOTTED SANDPIPERS 
- St. Albert lagoon, the south cell, on the same day; 190 GREATER and LESSER 
YELLOWLEGS, 150 LEAST and SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 2 SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 2 
STILT SANDPIPER, 1 WILSON'S SNIPE, 2 SANDERLING, 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 2 or 3 
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER and many SPOTTED SANDPIPERS
- Russell lagoon, small numbers of; GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS, LEAST and 
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 2 SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 1 STILT SANDPIPER, 1 PECTORAL 
SANDPIPER and numbers of SPOTTED SANDPIPERS 
- Embrun lagoon on July 25th; a few GREATER and 10 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 10 LEAST 
and 4 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 2 SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 3 SOLITARY SANDPIPER and 
3 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS (and 1 LEAST BITTERN) 
- Casselman lagoon, small numbers of LESSER YELLOWLEGS, LEAST and SPOTTED 
SANDPIPERS

Other interesting sightings were;
- a possible 2nd year LAUGHING GULL was reported at the Russell lagoon on July 
25th
- a family of GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHERS in the Prince of Wales area (between 
Heron Road and Hog's Back) included 1 spectacular albino juvenile
- NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRDS continue in Carleton Place
- 8 GRAY PARTRIDGE were seen south of Leitrim Road behind the airport
- 1 RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was seen at Shirleys Bay on July 22nd
- 2 GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS were seen at the Deschenes Rapids July 22nd
- the WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was still present on July 22nd at Shirleys Bay
