Hi Birders, the egret colony is growing at Richmond Dr. with the number hitting 62 tonight. Jacques Bouvier counted 72 for the high in 2011 and we are rapidly approaching that number and it isn't even Sept. yet. Some of the birds come in flarge groups about 12 at a time and it makes a spetacular sight seeing all those white birds in the air. The marsh continues to dry out and I wonder if it gets too dry, will the food supply support a larger number of birds. Hopefully we will get some rain on the weekend. In the meantime, it is good viewing; most of the birds are in place by 8:45 PM. They start making their way to the roost around 6:45 and straggle in for the next two hours. Good birding Bob Scranton
To get to Richmond, exit 401 east at Power Dam Dr. and come to the traffic light on Vincent Massey ( old highway #2). Turn right and drive 2 kilometers to Richmond DR. (on right). Drive 1/2 K; just before the railway tracks, you will see an entry to the marsh. Walk out to the disused rail line and stroll through the Marsh from an elevated view. It is illegal to walk on the main line railway tracks. The egret roost is on your left as you walk in. -- _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
