Weather: Couldn't have asked for a nicer start to September. Conditions were mild with a persistent gentle breeze and a thin layer of cloud muffling the sun. The wind was mostly out of the northeast, shifting east later. Raptor Observations: Today was a strong start to our 2012 season. Expecting a less-than-stellar first day out, we were pleasantly surprised to find fairly steady raptor movement for a good four hours midday. A total of ten species were observed with respectable early season showings from American Kestrel, Red-tailed Hawk and Northern Harrier leading the way. Non-raptor Observations: Canada Goose 66, Mute Swan 38, Mallard 271, Wood Duck 3, Blue-winged Teal 3, Double-crested Cormorant 55, Pied-billed Grebe 1, Ring-billed Gull 150, Great Blue Heron 4, Great Egret 5, Belted Kingfisher 1, Killdeer 2, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER 3, Tree Swallow 154, Barn Swallow 23, Northern Rough-winged Swallow 3, Purple Martin 41, Chimney Swift 5, Ruby-throated Hummingbird 2, Common Nighthawk 1, Cedar Waxwing 81, Northern Flicker 2, Red-bellied Woodpecker 2, Downy Woodpecker 2, Red-breasted Nuthatch 1, Black-capped Chickadee 2, Mourning Dove 17, Blue Jay 3, Warbling Vireo 2, Black-throated Green Warbler 4, Pine Warbler 1, Cape May Warbler 2, Tennessee Warbler 2, Red-winged Blackbird 84, Common Grackle 5, European Starling 67, Brown-headed Cowbird 8, American Goldfinch 6, House Finch 2 Monarch 15 Predictions: Similar to today, it's going to be partly cloudy with temperatures potentially reaching into the lower 80s. East winds appear to be likely during much of the day, which is never ideal. We'll see how it goes. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) SMRR- Lake Erie Metropark information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
