Weather: Another warm and humid day with temperatures ranging from 20C to 27C. Very light winds that started the day from the north-west and ended the day from the south. Raptor Observations: A slow day with only 46 individuals of 7 species. The first 10 minutes of the count saw 6 birds of 6 species fly directly over the tower, but instead of a precursor to a great day it turned out to be the highlight of the day. Non-raptor Observations: There was little migration of any kind today. Ruby-throated Hummingbirds seemed to like the light winds as 8 flew over. Between the hours of 9 and 10 EST 7 Sharp-shinned Hawks flew over and 5 of the 7 had an accompanying flock of Chimney Swifts ranging from 3 - 24 Swifts per flock for a total of 45 Chimney Swifts. Only 1 of the 5 American White Pelicans was seen today. Large numbers of waders with 27 Great Blue Heron, 109 Great Egret and 3 Green Heron. Also a nice-crisp winter plumage Spotted Sandpiper. Predictions: The weather forecast is for cooler temperatures and 30 millimetres of rain over night and perhaps into Saturday morning, with strong winds out of the north-west. Could be good for Peregrines. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Todd Pepper ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Migration Observatory information may be found at: http://hbmo.org/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
