Ontario, W. Quebec Compiler & transcriber Bob Cermak [email protected] or [email protected] Songbirds and Shorebirds continue to move through the Ottawa/Gatineau area. A OFO trip mostly in heavy rain and wind on the 8th found a total of 82 species. 14 warbler species were found on the 7th in the woodlot west of Tunney's Pasture and 14 warbler species were found in 6 hours at Shirleys Bay and Britannia on the 9th. 12 adult HUDSONIAN GODWIT were present on the 8th on the Ontario shore of the Ottawa river just east of Buckhams Bay in Constance Bay. The same day a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was found on the east shore of the north west cell of the Embrun lagoons. The pond on Moodie Drive (south of Trail Road) has an interesting variety of waterfowl including male REDHEAD (2 all week) and CANVASBACK (2 on the 9th). - Tunney's Pasture woodlot which has been slow this year was very active on the 7th. Warblers seen were; TENNESSEE, OVENBIRD, WILSON'S (3), CANADA, AMERICAN REDSTART, NORTHERN PARULA, YELLOW-RUMPED, MAGNOLIA, PALM, BLACK-THROATED GREEN, BLACKBURNIAN, BLACKPOLL, CHESTNUT-SIDED and BAY-BREASTED. RUBY CROWNED KINGLET and PHILADELPHIA VIREO (2) were also seen. - Britannia Conservation Area and Shirleys Bay were active all week. Warblers seen on the 9th; TENNESSEE (8), WILSON'S (3), NORTHERN PARULA (8), YELLOW-RUMPED (100+), MAGNOLIA (10+), BLACK-THROATED GREEN (10), BLACKBURNIAN (3), BLACKPOLL (10+), CHESTNUT-SIDED (5), CAPE MAY (2), BLACK-AND-WHITE (1), COMMON YELLOWTHROAT (1), YELLOW (1) and BAY-BREASTED (2). Vireos seen were; WARBLING (5), RED-EYED (2) and PHILADELPHIA (2). A CAROLINA WREN has been heard all week at Britannia north of Cassels Street usually near the fence at the west end of the ridge. Numbers of shorebirds continued to be seen this week. - the Shirleys Bay mud flats, although slower this week, continue to be the most reliable place in the area to find shorebirds. RED-NECKED PHALAROPE (2 and usually 3) continue to be seen west of the 1st island. Of interest this week were; BAIRD'S (2) and PECTORAL SANDPIPERS (15+), SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS (2) and BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS (8). Also seen were BALD EAGLE (3), PEREGRINE FALCON (2), RED-SHOULDERED HAWK (2) and AMERICAN BITTERN (1) - Andrew Haydon Park and the mud flats east to Lakeside Gardens; AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS (3) and BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS (26 mostly adult) were seen on the 8th Other interesting sighting were; - hundreds, perhaps thousands of SWAINSON'S THRUSH were heard migrating over the Carlington area on the night of the 9th - SNOW GEESE (6) previously seen with Canada Geese on the east side of Fisher Avenue north of Baseline Road were seen on the 7th at Remic Rapids - SANDHILL CRANES (5) were seen from Smith Road west of Milton Road on the 11th. Up to 14 have been seen in the past weeks - LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL (5) were seen at dusk on the rocks in the Deschenes Rapids on the 11th - GREAT EGRET (7), SORA, MERLIN, NORTHERN HARRIER and DARK-EYED JUNCO (2) were seen on the Sarsaparilla Trail on the 12th Thanks to everyone who contributed bird observations - Good Birding! _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
