Observation end time: 16:00:00
Total observation time: 10 hours
Official Counter: Jennifer Lyon
Observers: Chris Burris, Derek Lyon, Keith Sealy, Mark Cunningham,
Tom Bolohan
Visitors:
Thanks to Jen L. as counter with great help from Derek, Chris Burris (from
Waterloo), Tom B, Mark C. and Keith S.. Lots of Visitors for the second
open house weekend.
Weather:
A mixed bag of weather today...lots of cloud to start with the overnight
rain moving off to the east. Eventually, the clouds broke out a bit and the
sun poked through. Winds were moderate from the W and WNW all day.
Raptor Observations:
There were a few birds in the first few hours...but they really started to
move in the early afternoon as the sun broke through and the humidity
dropped. Obviously, there were some Broadwings still in the pipeline and
their flights helped bump up today's total to 5,517 raptors!
The Broadwings (5,117) made up the bulk of today's flight with several
good sized kettles...with other species including Sharpies (257), Kestrels
(111), Osprey (5), Bald Eagles (3), a smaller flight of N. Harriers (13),
Cooper's Hawks (4) and Merlin (7).
Not a single Peregrine was observed today.
Non-raptor Observations:
Dickie birds seen:
Warblers: Palm, Nashville, Redstart, Wilson's, Magnolia., Indigo Buntings,
Common Loons, RT Hummingbirds, Blue Jays (only about 200 today), Belted
Kingfisher, DC Cormorant
Song sparrow, Cardinals, 3 Great Blue Herons, Catbird, Tree Swallows, N.
Flicker, 3 Bonaparte gulls
Chimney Swifts
Other non-birds seen:
Excellent roost of approx 40-50 Monarchs on a branch to the left of the
counters! Green Darners, Black Saddlebags
Predictions:
Winds are predicted to be moderate from the W....which can be a decent wind
direction as long as there's lots of sunshine early on to get the birds up
and moving.
