Birder's-

I attempted to find the adult Mew Gull seen yesterday at the Sault Ste. Marie
Landfill. I could not relocate the bird and was ready to give up when I
noticed an immaculate juvenile Mew Gull drinking from a puddle about 6 feet
from the car. I had to back up to get pictures. It was present for the next
hour before I had to leave. Given the lack of any previous records for the area
including the intensively birded Whitefish Point this is either a miracle or
more like an associated event. My thoughts are a small flock of migrating Mew
Gulls must have been blown onto Lake Superior and are now floating about the
area. I discussed the situation with the Landfill management and they are not
comfortable with allowing the public into this area. There is only one access
roar which is used by all the heavy equipment and trucks constantly. It is very
busy and a fairly recent serious industrial accident at the site has reinforced
the priority for safety first. Large numbers of Ring-billed Gulls group along
the St. Mary's river and this maybe were the adult is hanging. I have noted
some recently ploughed fields along Second Line with accumulations of
Ring-billed Gulls and I remember Al Wormington finding a Mew Gull in this
situation a few years back in Essex.
