Weather: It was a pleasant first day of October, quiet and calm. The sun was mostly obscured by a high, thin layer of cloud that provided a nice spotting background. Fog was present for a brief period in the morning but quickly dissipated. The wind was light and out of the east and northeast. Raptor Observations: A slow morning gave way to a more active afternoon that saw a good number of buteos and Turkey Vultures streaming past. Red-tailed Hawks were the star attraction most of the time. Juvenile Red-shouldered Hawks continue to be seen with regularity. And a handful of Broad-winged Hawks wandered by as well. Non-raptor Observations: A large flock of Yellow-rumped Warblers (25+) was foraging in the trees at our back. Joining them was a lone Blackpoll Warbler. A Carolina Wren was singing and a Red-breasted Nuthatch was calling in the morning. Two Pine Siskins passed overhead. Chimney Swifts (5) are still hanging around. And of course, Blue Jays (5000+) remain a constant presence. Predictions: Cloudy with highs in the upper 60s and a 30 percent chance of rain. The wind will be out of the east northeast and around 10 mph. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) SMRR- Lake Erie Metropark information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The primary site used by the Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and it's Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
