Total observation time: 8 hours
Official Counter: Todd Pepper
Observers: Bob Hall-Brooks, Carol Pitts, Dennis Patrick, Ed Pitts,
Gwen Gidge, Jim McCoy, Larry Ludwicki
Visitors:
Ed and Carol Pitts from Zainesville, Ohio;
6 Members of the Macomb Audubon Society;
A family of 3 and their English Bull Mastiff;
A couple from Windsor out taking fall photographs.
Weather:
A cloudy day all day, with rain during the first hour and drizzle in the
second and last hours. Temperatures ranged from 9 - 12C; wind was primarily
out of the south-west all day in the range of 3 - 15 km/hr.
Raptor Observations:
It looked liked it was going to be a very slow day, but then the
Sharp-shinned Hawks started to fly shortly after 9 a.m. EST and were steady
the rest of the day for a total of 225 Sharpies, or 62% of the day total of
365 birds of 6 species.
Non-raptor Observations:
A large number of Chimney Swifts, a total of 87, "crossed" the line today
on migration and at least another 3 dozen continued to circle the marsh and
woods to the north-east as the station shut down for the day. The second
highlight, although only 2 birds, was Eastern Meadowlark. Here are a few
other highlights for the day: Northern Flicker - 4; Blue Jay - 645;
American Crow - 363; American Robin - 96; Yellow-rumped Warbler - 73; House
Finch - 18; American Goldfinch - 105.
Predictions:
It is supposed to be a sunny day on Sunday. Temperatures are forecasted to
range from 6C - 16C. Winds out of the west in the a.m. at 5 km/hr shifting
to the south-west in the p.m. with speeds up to 15 km/hr. Expect more
accipitors with adult Sharp-shinned Hawks and an increasing percentage of
Cooper's Hawks.
