Weather: Warm day. Temperatures ranged between 14.5C - 19.7C with light winds out of the southeast for the entire day. Slight rain in the early morning followed by a bit of haze but once the sun broke through, the temperature rose quickly. Raptor Observations: A surprising amount of activity considering the weather conditions. Red-tailed and Red-shouldered Hawks are coming over in higher numbers now while Sharp-shinned Hawks and Turkey Vultures continue to fly over in the highest numbers. The majority of Red-shouldered Hawks are adults. A total of 553 birds of 9 species. Non-raptor Observations: Passerine migration kept me busy in the morning and raptors replaced my counting for the afternoon once passerine activity slowed down. Counts of note: Blue Jays - 525, American Crow - 1,265, Horned Lark - 56, Tree Swallow - 25, Eastern Bluebird - 23, American Robin - 687, European Starling - 28,040, American Pipit - 115, Cedar Waxwing - 71, Red-winged Blackbird - 4,770, Common Grackle - 816, American Goldfinch - 127. Not as many ducks were present in the marsh today. Species present include Mallard, Gadwall, American Wigeon, American Black Duck, Mallard, Blue-winged Teal, Northern Shoveler, Northern Pintail, and Green-winged Teal. Hundreds of American Coot are in the marsh daily. Predictions: Sunny day with temperatures between 15C - 24C and winds out of the south between 20 - 25 km/hr. Raptor migration will likely be similar to today. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jeremy Hatt ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Migration Observatory information may be found at: http://hbmo.org/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
