Weather: Moderate NW wind. Temp 2-5. Rain/sleet/snow and clearing/sun patches cycled continuously throughout the day. Raptor Observations: Spent the morning at Sharpie Alley and the afternoon at the B & B. The raptors threaded the eye of one damp, miserable needle after another: Whenever the rain stopped, they moved. This was capped off by the magnificent 3 o'clock hour: 10 species (including a wrong-way Bald Eagle)... 7 Golden Eagles (all low -- some at treetop height), and 1 Northern Goshawk that loitered long enough to allow study. Total birds for the day was 455. Non-raptor Observations: Passerines were present in good numbers as well: large numbers of Purple Finches and a few Red Crossbills called overhead. American Crows, Red-winged Blackbirds, and Common Grackles were also moving through in good numbers. "On the ground," Golden-crowned Kinglet, Cedar Waxwing, Eastern Bluebird, and Belted Kingfisher were observed. Lone Palm and Yellow-rumped Warblers were noted, along with Song, Swamp, White-throated, White-crowned, and Field Sparrows. Four woodpecker species (including Pileated) were around as well. Predictions: Well...if the sun manages to get through the clouds and the snow / rain holds off then Saturday could bring a really good flight of birds...and looking forward to Sunday and Monday ...both days are looking promising. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Dave Brown ([email protected]) Hawk Cliff Hawkwatch information may be found at: http://www.ezlink.on.ca/~thebrowns/HawkCliff/index.htm _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
