Weather: We were greeted with overcast skies but unlike yesterday we got some early clearing, leaving us with a nice mix of white and blue for much of the day. Temperatures reached up into the lower 40s. The wind was light and variable. Raptor Observations: After a slow start to the day, movement really picked up over the last two hours, producing some stellar looks at a succession of Golden Eagles and high-flying Red-tailed and Red-shouldered hawks. Non-raptor Observations: Common Tern (1), Forster's Tern (3), Bonaparte's Gull (25+), Ruddy Duck (5) and Pied-billed Grebe (2) could be found in the channel at various points throughout the day. Horned Lark (3) and Purple Finch (1) were detected passing overhead. Dark-eyed Junco (6), Pine Siskin (20+) and a big flock of Rusty Blackbirds (50+) were noted in the trees at our back. Also, two Hooded Mergansers flew by in the morning, headed out toward the lake. Predictions: Mostly sunny with highs in the mid 40s and light south wind. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) SMRR- Lake Erie Metropark information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The primary site used by the Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and it's Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
