Hello Ontbirders,

Today, Kellie Superina and I birded the Long Point area. At 14.50, we observed
at least 290 Sandhill Cranes in a field of cut corn. Though this species is
common in the area, I thought the quantity was remarkable enough to be worthy
of mentioning. This is certainly the largest congregation of Sandhill Cranes
the two of us have ever seen!

Also of note, a mature Bald Eagle was seen from BSC HQ flying over the Long
Point Inner Bay with a partially-eaten kill. Although it was not being
harassed, it dropped its meal, only to catch another meal in the water within a
minute of this happening. Again, although Bald Eagles are a relatively common
sighting in the area at this time of year, the behaviour was noteworthy.

Happy birding!

Directions: From Highway 401, take the exit for Highway 59 south, near
Woodstock. Follow it to Lakeshore Road (County Road 42) and turn right (west).
The Sandhill Cranes were observed to the west of the intersection of Lakeshore
Road and Long Point Road (Highway 59), on the south side. BSC HQ is located to
the east of the same intersection, along Front Road.
