Temperatures hovered just about freezing throughout the day with the wind shifting between west and northwest. A few flakes of snow were seen during the day as well. The sun tried to peak out briefly, but for the most part, it was a cold, cloudy day on the tower. Raptor Observations: It was an extremely slow day for raptor migration. No movement was noted after 2 pm. Even the resident Bald Eagle spent the entire day sitting in the same spot in the marsh. Non-raptor Observations: There was a steady movement of finches past the tower today, the majority were American Goldfinches (500+), with some Pine Siskins (80). One small group of Eastern Bluebirds (6) passed the tower, and no crows or blackbirds were noted. Waterfowl numbers and diversity are still good in the marsh, including Blue-winged and Green-winged Teal, Northern Shoveler, Wood Duck, Ruddy Duck, Mallards etc. 4 Sandhill cranes were noted in the morning and there were flocks of Tundra Swans passing through the site all day. A lone Carolina Wren was singing on and off. Predictions: Winds are predicted from the east tomorrow and it will be a little warmer with some sun, which will hopefully bring the raptors that were cruising the Point Pelee peninsula today ======================================================================== Report submitted by Sarah Rupert ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Migration Observatory information may be found at: http://hbmo.org/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
