Quebec Compiler & transcriber Bob Cermak [email protected] or [email protected] Local birders learned on the 19th that a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was found on the 17th and photographed on the 18th on a trail behind the Bell Centennial Arena in Bells Corners. This bird has not been subsequently reported. An extremely late ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK continues (last reported on the 16th) at a Fitzroy Harbour feeder. PINE GROSBEAK (single birds and small flocks up to 11), BOHEMIAN WAXWING (small flocks and 150+ north of the Britannia Conservation Area), EVENING GROSBEAK (flocks up to 20+), RED CROSSBILL (single birds heard and a flock of 20 in Constance Bay) and COMMON REDPOLLS (small flocks) continue to be seen throughout our area this past week. This report from the Shirleys Bay dike on the 16th; AMERICAN COOT (10), LONG-TAILED DUCK (1), CANADA GOOSE (500), SCAUP sp. (400), COMMON GOLDENEYE (300), RING-NECKED DUCK (300), HOODED (150), COMMON (50) and RED-BREASTED (1) MERGANSER with very few puddle ducks. Other interesting sighting were; - BLACK SCOTER (1 female) was at a very unusual location, on the Rideau River west of the Smyth Rd bridge on the 15th - FOX SPARROW (1) at a Carleton Place feeder on the 18th - BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER continue to be seen near the Stony Swamp trails - SANDHILL CRANE (151 on the 18th) continue to be seen on Smith or Milton Roads - CACKLING (5), SNOW (16) and GREATER WHITE-FRONTED (1) GEESE (on the 22nd) continue on the Moodie Dr pond - ICELAND (1) GULL was seen at the Moodie Dr pond and a GLAUCOUS GULL was seen at Andrew Haydon Park on the 19th - HORNED LARK (120) were seen just south west of Winchester on the 20th Thanks to everyone who contributed bird observations - Good Birding! _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
