Hey Birders,

A group of 13 birders from the Kitchener-Waterloo Field Naturalists undertook
our annual tour of the Niagara River today, starting at Niagara-on-the-Lake,
and ending at the Control Gates. On-route, we stopped briefly in the Hamilton
area.

Highlights as follows:

King Eider - 2 first-winter males at the end of Green's Road, 1 appeared to be
very female like in plumage with the exception of the bill and chest colouring
Red-throated Loon - 1 bird at NOTL
Turkey Vulture - several birds along the river - no Black's seen
Swallow sp. - 4 birds on the American side of the river at the Control Gates -
they were too far to ID conclusively but were more than likely Northern
Rough-winged's (reported there on the NY listserve yesterday)

Gulls:
FRANKLIN'S - the adult bird was seen easily from the 'roosting rock's about
400m south of the Adam Beck overlook
Little - 1 adult and 1 second-year bird seen at the Queenston Dock
Thayer's - 1 adult at the Pumphouse
Iceland - single adults at Adam Beck and the Pumphouse
Lesser Black-backed - 7 at the Pumphouse, 5 at the Control Gates - various ages
Great Black-backed X Herring - 1 third-winter bird at the Pumphouse

In total we saw 9 species of gull's, plus 1 hybrid. Things should really be
getting 'going' in days following. We didn't look for the reported Black-headed
Gull near Fort Erie (reported on the NY listserve).

Please email me for directions.

Good Birding,
Jim, Mike and Ken Burrell
