Hello Ontbirders,
A Purple Sandpiper was found in Niagara Falls on Dec.4, Tuesday, just above the
Falls on large rocks near the broken barge in the Niagara River near Toronto
Power Generating Station. Birders with scopes found the bird and we did see the
bird through binoculars albeit very small. Scopes are better. To get to Niagara
Falls, go to QEW Niagara (southbound), exit at highway 420 to the Falls, follow
directions to the Falls, just above the Niagara Falls on the Canadian Side is
the abandoned barge. Continue on River Road to park your car at Dufferin
Islands for free, walk back to the barge along the path along the river. Also
in a water intake bay for the hydro plant, along this path we saw about 70
Hooded Mergansers, always a delight, and other kinds of regular ducks. We were
not able to locate the special gulls amongst the hundreds of gulls down there.
Needles in haystacks.Good luck.......Astrid Akkerman
