The Buffalo Bird Report is a service provided by your
Buffalo Museum of Science and the Buffalo Ornithological
Society. To contact the Science Museum, call 896-5200.

Highlights of reports received during the past two weeks,
December 20 through January 3, from the Niagara Frontier
  Region include SLATY-BACKED GULLS, N. ROUGH-W. SWALLOW,
AMERICAN PIPIT, SNOWY OWL and PINE WARBLER.

Above Niagara Falls, two distinct, adult SLATY-BACKED GULLS
have been identified. The first one, December 30, viewed
from the control gates pull-off in Ontario, and a second
SLATY-BACKED GULL, January 1, viewed from the outlet of
Dufferine Creek, also in Ontario. Other gulls reported above
the falls - THAYER'S GULL, ICELAND GULL, L. BLACK-B. GULL
  and GLAUCOUS GULL.

Also at Niagara Falls, and unprecedented in winter, N.
ROUGH-W. SWALLOW, still at Goat Island on January 3. On the
2nd, an AMERICAN PIPIT on Lake Erie at Dunkirk Harbor.

January 2, on the Buffalo waterfront, a SNOWY OWL on the
sand spit at Donnely's Pier, about a quarter mile off shore
from LaSalle Park and the Erie Basin Marina tower. Also, an
unexpected NORTHERN HARRIER this week, over Donnely's Pier.

December 31 and January 3, a PINE WARBLER, first found on
one of the region's many Christmas Counts, on Dietz Road at
the east side of Four Mile Creek State Park in the Niagara
  County Town of Porter.

Other Christmas Count highlights - ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and 2
COMMON RAVENS at Beaver Meadows in Wyoming County, and two
HOARY REDPOLLS in the Niagara County Town of Wilson. At
Birdsong Park in Orchard Park, a flyover ICELAND GULL and a
HERMIT THRUSH, on the trail off the Jewett Road parking lot.

Flocks of COMMON REDPOLLS have been noted at feeders and
weedy fields all across the region. SNOW BUNTINGS also
widely reported, with HORNED LARKS and small numbers of
  LAPLAND LONGSPURS.

NORTHERN SHRIKE on Mix Road at Maple Road in Orleans County,
and at Davis State Park in Lewiston. In the Village of
Lewiston, 7 BLACK VULTURES among 30 TURKEY VULTURES at
Mohawk and 5th Street, and two adult BALD EAGLES off the
Lewiston boat docks. Two BALD EAGLES also on the upper
  Niagara River at Strawberry Island.

Two SHORT-EARED OWL reports - on Route 18 near the Wilson-Porter
Townline, and in Fort Erie, Ontario, on Ott Road near the
castle. HERMIT THRUSH also in Fort Erie at Burger and Bowen
  Roads.

On Lake Ontario, RED-THROATED LOONS appear to be
outnumbering COMMON LOONS. Two RED-THROATED LOONS on the
Niagara River off the Fort Niagara State Park boat launch,
with numbers of WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS and LONG-TAILED DUCKS.

PEREGRINE FALCON atop the North Grand Island Bridge, and
another PEREGRINE FALCON chasing the abundant BONAPARTE'S
GULLS on the Black Rock Canal at Rich Marine in Buffalo.

The Bird Report will be updated Thursday evening, January
  10. Please call in your sightings by noon Thursday. You may
report sightings after the tone. Thank you for calling and
  reporting.
