Today Ian Cannell, Jay Peterson and I went up to Ravenshoe Rd / Yonge St. in
Queensville and we were very lucky to find some Snowy Owls.
Along Ravenshoe Rd (east of Leslie St.) we found an amazing 8 Snow y Owls and a
9th one along Yonge St. We were only able to travel abut half way along Yonge
St. due to the thick mud on this road (Ravenshoe RD is paved) so maybe, just
maybe another Snowy or two were further along the street.
Again – Yonge Street is a very muddy unpaved street.
We also found an adult Cooper’s Hawk along Ravenshoe Rd.
From here we drove over to the Holland Marsh north of Hwy 9 along the Jane,
Keele and Dufferin Streets and along Aileen Rd near Edward St we spotted our
10th Snowy Owl of the day.
Not much else in the area but we did find a belted Kingfisher along Canal Rd
west of Hwy 400.
Note:- Ravenshoe Rd (for the owl) runs west from Leslie Street in Queensville
which is north of Newmarket and Holland Landing and Yonge Street starts at the
west end of Ravenshoe and goes south..
ALL of the fields, etc. are private property and one must not venture
off of the road and there is no reason you should as all owls are visible from
the roads.
Be sure that you do not block the road as this is a busy area with
trucks, etc.
A telescope is of great help for further out birds but you should be
able to find most of them with binoculars.
Note per Ron Fleming
(Please note that the northern extensions of Toronto's well-known Bathurst,
Keele, Dufferin and Jane Streets bear little resemblance to their urban
namesakes. When you get north of Hwy. 9 they are country roads and - in the
vegetable fields - each of them is interrupted by a small river that cuts
diagonally across "the marsh", separating York Region from Simcoe County. To
reach Jane St. N, for example, you have to drive west along Woodchopper's Lane,
then north on Wist Rd. beside Hwy. 400, then east along Canal Road to rejoin
Jane when it runs south from Tornado Drive.)
