The huge cold snap has sent the list diving and even the birds at the top of
the list are questionable at the end of this week. As of last Saturday at
Sedgewick Park in Oakville, birds being reported included at least two
RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, Golden-crowned Kinglet, ORANGE-CROWNED, NASHVILLE,
BAY-BREASTED and Yellow-rumped Warblers. This is the last reported
sightings of these birds. A search yesterday did turn up a Warbler sp. but
heavy snow was falling and the bird flew high into the pines so
identification was not possible. If anyone has any further reports of these
birds over the weekend, it would be appreciated. Unfortunately the BARN
SWALLOWS have not been reported this week but it would be a tough week to
survive here and get food.

A few other good winter birds have been seen in the area this week. The
BROWN THRASHER has been reported from the Guelph Arboretum, a Barred Owl was
seen close to the Arboretum Centre near College Ave last Saturday. BOHEMIAN
WAXWINGS were seen at Safari Road near Highway 6 near Bogles Seed. In a
group of mixed Redpolls and Sparrows a HOARY REDPOLL was seen and well
studied at Globe Park in Hamilton. Up in the north of the area a
Red-shouldered Hawk has been fairly reliable at County Road 32 and the 401,
sometimes being seen north of here near Ellis Road as well. Yesterday it
was hunting the fields at 6637 Ellis Road. Here also is a Savannah Sparrow
mixed in with a group of American Tree Sparrows. A Yellow-bellied Sapsucker
was a guest at a feeder in east Oakville this week. Two Fox Sparrows have
been wintering at a feeder near Central Park in Burlington.

In the odds and sods this week, a Wood Duck, Ring-necked Ducks and
Canvasbacks were waterfowl noted at LaSalle Marina yesterday. Ruffed Grouse
continue to come into a feeder near Concession 8 and Westover Road at dusk.
Three Horned Grebes were seen at Bayfront Park yesterday. A Black-crowned
Night Heron carefully conceals itself in the pines there. Turkey Vultures
were seen over the 403 and Garden Ave earlier in the week. Glaucous Gulls
seem to be on the increase with three being seen this week from Canada
Centre for Inland Waters and one being present at LaSalle Marina. A Snowy
Owl was seen at Jack Darling Park yesterday but flew down the shoreline and
was relocated west of Rattray Marsh. A Short-eared Owl was seen at the
large field at Rebecca and Great Lakes Blvd in Oakville earlier in the week.
Up in Flamborough on Concession 1 in Puslinch a mixed flock of 100 Snow
Buntings and Horned Larks were seen in a corn field yesterday. These
species should be on the move now.

That's the news for this week albeit a little grim. Maybe the lack of
reports of these birds is due to lack of birders. Any updates on the
Sedgewick birds or the Barn Swallows would be appreciated.

Have a great week,
Cheryl Edgecombe
