Greetings. Today, Sunday I checked out the St. Clair River to Sarnia and joined Lambton Wildlife for a while on their annual river tour. There are still hundreds of gulls riding ice floes downriver. There was not much south of Sombra, but most activity was north of Stanley Line.
Of note, I had about 60 Glaucous Gulls from north of Sombra to the Suncour Dock at the south end of Sarnia. (those are the ones I saw, and who knows what was from Mooretown to Corunna where we cannot see!). This is the most I have ever had on the river! (a few years ago I had around 35 or so). Many were at Lambton Generating Station south of Courtright, the the next concentration was north of Stag Island from Corunna to the Suncour Dock. At Guthrie Park north of Corunna, for ducks of note there were at least two GADWALL and one male NORTHERN PINTAIL at the outlet of Talfourd Creek. In mid river and beyond were thousands of ducks including 3 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS and several hundred COMMON GOLDENEYE among others. At Willow Park in front of Lambton Generating Station, there were at least 3 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS and 2 ICELAND today among hundreds of gulls. Also of note was what I thought to be an apparent hybrid HERRING X GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL adult. Just north of Stanley Line at the OCF outlet (formerly ICI) were many birds including a TRUMPETER SWAN early this morning. At least two Trumpeter Swans have been on the river since first noticed December 29 at Sombra. Locations vary widely! Several BALD EAGLES are hunting along the river this winter. Also, the two PEREGRINE FALCONS were highly visible on the Bluewater Bridge at Sarnia this morning. (They have been elusive lately!). Directions: Just follow the St. Clair Parkway south of Sarnia along the river and stop where necessary. Several parks allow you to pull in safely. Lambton Generating Station is south of Courtright, about 2 km south of Courtright Line (Lambton #80). Stanley Line is three roads south of that. Cheers, Blake A.
