An adult Red-shouldered Hawk made a brief appearance at the St. Jacobs Dam
at about 12:00 noon. It was moving in a southerly direction, making
frequent brief stops in the trees along the Conestoga River.

I assumed that this is the famous Hawkesville wintering RSHA, known from the
area for ten years. It (or another individual?) has been reported from
nearby St. Jacobs this winter (as seen on The Weather Channel website).
However, Jason McGuire's report of an adult RSHA near Cambridge makes me
wonder whether it might also be the same bird that we saw. Five hours would
certainly have been enough elapsed time for it to have travelled the 30 km
between the sites. It would be interesting to know whether the Hawkesville
bird is still around.

On the Millrace Trail, north of the dam, two Bohemian Waxwings fed quietly
on the sparse buckthorn crop. After about 30 minutes, they were joined by
6-7 Cedar Waxwings, and another small flock after that.

The dam is about 1 km west of King St. Take Henry St. west to its end and
turn right. Watch for the trail sign and parking just before the low-level
bridge. The Bohemians were about 400 m down the trail, just before the "cow
bridge" over the race. Look for buckthorn berries and for movement in the
cedars overhanging the far side of the race.
