Further to the earlier posting today by Blake Mann regarding ROSS'S GEESE at
Shrewsbury, be advised that due to ice fishermen and their snowmobiles on
Rondeau Bay at Shrewsbury, the aforementioned ROSS'S GEESE have a tendency to
move. This afternoon, February 23, from about 2 p.m. until at least 3 p.m.
eight ROSS'S GEESE were quite visible from Erieau, across the main channel
looking east, in some open water at the south edge of the south beach of
Rondeau Provincial Park. They were loosely associated with several dozen Canada
Geese.
Directions to Erieau: From 401 at Exit 90, take Communication Road
(Chatham-Kent Road 11) south to Blenheim. At the main intersection of Blenheim,
take Talbot Street (Chatham-Kent Road 3) west for about 5 km to Erieau Road
(Chatham-Kent Road 12). Take Erieau Road south to the village of Erieau. At
Erieau, follow the one-way road to the T-intersection and turn right, following
Mariner's Road to the main channel between Lake Erie and Rondeau Bay. The birds
were across the main channel. Best light is in the afternoon.
If you are interested in a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER while you are passing through
the area, please note that once you turn off Talbot Road towards Erieau, at the
northeast corner of Old Street and Erieau Road there is a church. Quite
predictably, there is an immature Red-headed Woodpecker frequently seen on one
of the first 3-4 hydro poles north of the church. It has been there for about
two months.
