____________________________________________________________ Species at Risk - Field research assistants Bird Studies Canada is seeking field research assistants (several positions) to help with the delivery of conservation activities and research projects for several species at risk in southern Ontario including Cerulean Warbler, Acadian Flycatcher, Louisiana Waterthrush, Prothonotary Warbler, Eastern Whip-poor-will, and Barn Swallow. General duties will be varied and may include: 1. Extensive field work; nest searching and monitoring, bird surveys (e.g., point counts, area searches, territory mapping), habitat and vegetation sampling, bird banding and re-sighting banded birds, etc. 2. Processing audio/video recordings to determine bird occupancy/detection rates 3. Entering and organizing data and maintaining databases 4. Communicating with landowners, volunteers and the general public 5. Assisting with the development of technical reports and publications Some positions may be funded by Canada Summer Jobs, and therefore hiring preference may be giving to applicants that meet eligibility criteria (below). However, applicants not meeting eligibility are still encouraged to apply. ELIGIBILITY: To meet eligibility criteria for Canada Summer Jobs funding, the candidate MUST * be between 15 and 30 years of age; * have been registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year; * be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident or have official refugee protection status under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (foreign students are not eligible); and * be legally entitled to work in Canada, according to relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations. EXPERIENCE: the candidate should be working towards a B.Sc. in biology (or related field). The ideal candidate will have a good knowledge of southern Ontario birds (identification skills), a good understanding of avian conservation issues related to species at risk in Ontario and knowledge of or experience with population sampling techniques (e.g., point counts) is desirable. Experience with canoeing, orientation (GPS, compass, maps) and camping may be helpful. The position requires a high level of organization, initiative, good record keeping and verbal communication skills, and an understanding of data management. STARTING SALARY RANGE: $1,800 - 2,500 (CDN) per month, plus legal benefits and housing accomodations. These positions range in length from 3-4 months depending on funding (May through August). Applicants must be willing to relocate to our headquarters office in Port Rowan, ON, or work may require camping in central/eastern Ontario during fieldwork.
