Hi Ontbirders: Went to Hilda late in the day and saw 2 Hoary Redpolls perched very close to one another next to the feeder. I am not surprised to read there were 6 Hoaries at the same feeders as I saw 4 individual Hoaries there earlier in the week. Glad somebody went to count them :-)
The birds were scarce as either a Coopers or Sharp-shin was nearby. Someone actually heard what he thought was a Coopers 15 minutes before I even saw it fly out. That's great hearing with all the noisy red-winged blackbirds around. Maybe a 10 minute drive from Hilda Road, on March Valley Road near Klondike perched an active Great Gray Owl just behind the fence line in DND property. Someone told it it had been actively hunting since 2:30pm or so. Further along March Valley Road where it narrows, another Great Gray was seen perched atop a tree on the south side. I took a drive along Huntmar and saw a Great Gray owl perched right next to the road. It was no more than a foot off the ground/snow. Had great looks at this one. Happy birding. W. Hum http://www.pbase.com/golfpic/some_recent_shots Directions: From Ottawa, follow Carling west to Rifle. Turn right on Rifle and right again on Lois and left on Hilda. To March Valley Road: take Carling westward and to past Rifle. Keep going until Hertzberg. Turn right on Hertzberg and right again on March Valley Road. Continue left until just before Klondike. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
