The colder weather late this year has made for a slower than normal migration
however the warmer weather this week should create conditions that encourage a
stronger migration into our area. There is still a lot of snow on the ground
and ice continues to cover most rivers and creeks.
Cobbs Lake Creek east of Bourget, the Nation River near Pendleton and Constance
Creek near Dunrobin are still frozen. There was one male WOOD DUCK on a very
small amount of open water at Bear Brook Creek at the Frank Kenny bridge today.
There were a few small flocks of CANADA GEESE in the Milton Road, Frank Kenny,
Russell Rd and Cobbs Creek areas today. NORTHERN HARRIER (1) was seen, AMERICAN
PIPIT (1) and GRAY PARTRIDGE (1) were heard today on Lalonde Rd north of
Bourget. The Ottawa River is starting to open above and below the Deschenes
Rapids and west of Bate Island. BUFFLEHEAD (4), GREATER SCAUP (2), HOODED
MERGANSER (4) and RING-NECKED DUCK (7) were seen from Britannia Point (east end
of Cassels St) yesterday. The Mississippi River is open in Carleton Place. I
believe the Rideau River is mostly open, male and female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE are
being seen just north of the North River Rd tennis club and a male is often
seen just south of the Hurdman bridge.

There has been an extraordinary collection of COMMON and HOARY REDPOLL at the
Hilda Rd feeders this week. On the 22nd one expert local birder reported "there
were 250+ Southern COMMON REDPOLL, 1 Greater (rostrata) COMMON REDPOLL, 5-6
Southern (exilipes) HOARY REDPOLL and 1 Hornemann's (hornemanni) HOARY
REDPOLL." On the same day at that location I had a report of 10-12 Southern
HOARY and 2-3 Greater COMMON and the next day 2 Hornemanni (1m 1f) were
reported. FIELD SPARROW (2) were reported on the 23rd and a MERLIN continues to
be seen regularly at that location.

BOREAL CHICKADEE (1) was last seen at 121 Chemin Blackburn in Val-des-Monts
north of Perkins on the 25th.

EVENING GROSBEAK (40+), WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL (11), REDPOLL (many), NORTHERN
SHRIKE (1) and NORTHERN GOSHAWK (1) were seen on the 23rd at the backyard
feeders on Indian Creek Rd (which becomes Clarence-Cambridge Rd) on the west
edge of the Larose Forest.

A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was reported from the New Edinburgh area on the 21st but
has not been found since.

An AMERICAN WOODCOCK was seen in a Carleton Place back yard on the 27th

Interesting sighting were;
- Increasing numbers of CANADA GEESE and RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD are being seen
all over our area
- BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER (1m 1f) were seen near the Jack Pine Trail feeders on
the 24th, a female was seen in the Lime Kiln Trail burn area on the 25th and a
male was seen at the Rockcliffe Park "Pine Hill" late last week
- BOHEMIAN WAXWING flocks continue to move through our area
- GOLDEN EAGLE was reported over the parliament buildings on the 25th
- RUSTY BLACKBIRD (1) at an Orleans feeder on the 24th
- CAROLINA WREN continue to be seen in the woods on the west side of the
Britannia Conservation Area and 1 was reported in the Billings Bridge area on
the 22nd

Thanks to everyone who contributed bird observations - Good Birding!
