HI all,
I was at Presqu'ile this morning and some some interesting birds:
2 Red-throated Loon in non breeding plumage were scoped from Owen Pt
in glass calm conditions early. They appeared to be swimming off
Beach 2.
The gull colony on Gull island is in full swing and there are many
thousands of Ring-bills and hundreds of Herrings taking up station
there. Mixed in with them, mostly sitting on the gravel bar east of
Sebastopol Pt. (the island with the bush on it) were 5 Iceland Gull (3
ad., 1 1st winter, 1 sub-adult), 6 Great Black-backed, 3 Lesser Black-
backed (a crisp adult, a near adult and a first-winter) and 4 Glaucous
(2 ad., 1 1st winter, 1 2nd winter). A scope is needed to see them
and early morning (before 830) is best for light and heat haze issues.
There still are not many migrant passerines in but I did find a few
territorial Winter Wrens back, and a Rusty Blackbird near the Owen Pt.
trail parking area.
There are tons of ducks around but they are fairly scattered around
Presqu'ile Bay - best spot in recent days is the small Parkette on
Harbour Street (about 1 km east of base of causeway/foot of Ontario
St.). Yesterday I had most expected species there including big
numbers of Redheads and Ring-necks as well as 300 Am. Wigeon and 45
Pintails.
Cheers,
Doug McRae
Directions: Presqu'ile is on the north shore of Lake Ontario, south
of the town of Brighton. It is well signed from Hwy 401 and Hwy 2.
