I spent some time walking down March Valley Rd at about 10:00am today, and was rewarded with some good birding.
The main interest were the raptors. AMERICAN KESTRELS, RED-TAILED HAWK, BALD EAGLE and NORTHERN HARRIER were all seen, but the best bird (by far) was a SHORT-EARED OWL. He was spotted flying high over the field opposite the feeders (not the ones near Riddell Drive), but didn't stick around long. He flew away in the direction of Riddell, and I could not relocate him. Apart from the raptors, I observed 9+ HOODED MERGANSERS on the various ponds and flying by along the road. SPOTTED SANDPIPER, KILLDEER and GREATER YELOWLEGS were also present. There were also many large flocks of swallows, and I identified TREE SWALLOW, BARN SWALLOW and PURPLE MARTIN. DIRECTIONS (from Carling Avenue): Head southwest on Carling, turn right onto Herzberg, continue onto Terry Fox, turn right onto March Valley _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
