Birders:
I received a photo of a Swallow-tailed Kite earlier today. The bird had been
observed flying about 3 km southwest of Chatham along Bloomfield Road, a bit
north of Hwy 401, at approximately 1:30 p.m. yesterday, April 29. The observer
did not want to be named and was not sure of the identification, but submitted
the photos to Rondeau Prov Park staff who circulated them earlier today for
confirmation of the id. The photos were taken on a cellphone, so not the
greatest, and it was a very overcast day at the time. However the salient
features are visible.
At least two of us checked the area this morning after we heard about this
sighting, but did not find any evidence. Presumably the bird is well beyond the
area, or not, so this is a heads up to birders travelling through SW Ontario to
be on the lookout for it.
