Hey, A Chuck-will's-widow was calling loudly this morning [5 am] behind my house, just west of Woodstock. I had to give my head a few shakes to make sure this wasn't just another silly birding dream. The Chuck called for about 5 min. until moving off up the hill to resume another brief period of calling. I actually ended up traipsing through the bush in my slippers and robe to get a snippet of audio.
Much credit for the record goes to my wife, for insisting on cracking the window, despite the incessant trilling of the toads in our pond. Remarkably, the same site was host to a Whip-poor-will on April 29 this spring, my 1st yard record of that species as well. This is the 2nd ever record for Oxford - the 1st was May 14, 1996, Beachville. I will re-post if the bird is heard again tonight. The woodlot is just south of the SE corner of the Dorland Subdivision. From the Beachville Road, take Dougall Street to Marian Street. The woods is visible behind the houses.
