Quebec Compiler & transcriber Bob Cermak [email protected] or [email protected] A GRAY JAY was seen at the west "gates" on Cassels St in the Britannia Conservation Area this morning (6th) at 10:15 but has not been subsequently found. A male PROTHONOTARY WARBLER was banded at the Innis Point banding station on the 1st. WHIMBREL (on the 2nd) and RUDDY TURNSTONE (9 on the 2nd and 1 on the 3rd) were seen on the Lakeside Gardens (Britannia Park) Ottawa River piers. NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was seen at Lakeside Gardens and north of the Corkstown Rd Equestrian Park on the 2nd and on the Shirleys Bay causeway on the 3rd. On the 5th one was seen and heard imitating the song or call of AMERICAN ROBIN, EASTERN PHOEBE, HOUSE WREN, BELTED KINGFISHER and GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER in the Kanata Emerald Meadows sub division. Spring migration is winding down. A GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH was found in the Tunney's Pasture woodlot on the 31st, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW on the Rockcliffe Airport fence line and WHITE-WINGED SCOTER (1 m) at Shirleys Bay on the 1st, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK over Bowesville Rd on the 3rd and a WILSON'S WARBLER from Cassels St on the 6th. With the high water levels all over our area there have been very few shorebirds reported this week. On the 1st a RED KNOT and a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE flew over the Moodie Dr ponds. RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was also seen from Britannia Point on the 2nd. On the 1st at Embrun lagoon were SEMIPALMATED PLOVER (6), SEMIPALMATED (14) and LEAST (1) SANDPIPERS. On the flooded fields at the NE corner of Carling and Hertzberg there were BLACK-BELLIED (9) and SEMIPALMATED (1) PLOVER with LEAST SANDPIPER (10+) on the 2nd through the 5th. Breeding birds, and lots of mosquitoes, were reported from Larose Forest. On the 2nd a local birder reported "Cape May Warbler heard and later seen in six locations: three heard on Skidder/Rd# 6; four seen in two separate locations on north Bertrand/Neuf Mille Rd; singles heard on Fisher/Rd #9; Drouin/Rd #10; and, Clarence-Cambridge Rd. 2 Pine Warbler heard at two locations on Indian Creek Rd north of shelter. 1 Canada Warbler calling on west side of north Bertrand/Neuf Mille Rd." Also reported from Larose Forest were OVENBIRD, BLACK-AND-WHITE, NASHVILLE, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT and YELLOW WARBLER. WHIP-POOR-WILL (4) were heard on the 1st. COMMON TERN and occasionally BLACK TERN and BONAPARTE'S GULL have been seen at Britannia Point but no ARCTIC TERN were reported. Interesting sightings; - CEDAR WAXWING flocks have been reported all over our area - WHIP-POOR-WILL (many after 9 pm) and COMMON NIGHTHAWK (3 after 8:30 pm) are present on the north side of the Torbolton ridge on the Thomas Dolan Pkwy - CASPIAN TERN (1) was at the Moodie Dr pond on the 29th - COMMON GALLINULE (6+) and AMERICAN COOT (3+) are present in the middle east cell of the St. Albert lagoon - PALM WARBLER and LINCOLN'S SPARROW have been reported from the Mer Bleue boardwalk - EVENING GROSBEAK continue at the feeders on the west edge of Larose Forest - GRAY PARTRIDGE (2) were seen on the path to the south Giroux Rd quarry pond on the 2nd Thank you to everyone who contributed bird observations! _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
